Chamunorwa “Chamu” Chibhabha is a high-class and experienced International Cricketer and former International Captain from Zimbabwe. From a cricketing family, Chamu is a right-handed Top Order Batsman and skilful Right-arm medium pace seamer, who in February 2024, will complete his 20th year in the big time. Zimbabwe Cricket named him as the captain of Zimbabwe’s One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) squads in January 2020 and in 2023, Chamu played his 150th match for Zimbabwe, a simply outstanding achievement.
Chamu made his professional debut in summer 2003-04 for his native Mashonaland Eagles as a 17 year old in February 2004. His first class debut followed a month later and after a couple of seasons finding his feet in the big time, his maiden first-class century came against Sri Lanka A in Harare in late 2007 although it could have come a few weeks earlier after making 98 before being run out against South Africa Academy.
An excellent white-ball cricketer, he made his ODI debut in 2005 and played over a 100 times for Zimbabwe in the shorter formats before making his 2016 Test debut against New Zealand in July 2016, boxing off a complete representative career. All in all, his professional career to date a has accrued over 14,000 runs and 250 wickets and he remains and will go down as one of the modern day legends of Zimbabwe domestic cricket.
Chamu has had a couple of season of experience in the UK, with 2013-2015 spent with Harefield CC in the ECB Home Counties Premier League. His 42 appearances for the club yielded 1464 runs @ 44.36 but his even more impressive performances were with the ball, collecting 89 wickets @ 14.72. His best performance coming against Aston Rowant, bagging 7-29 in the 2014 summer.
Seeking his first season abroad in many years in 2024, Chamu joined Rugby CC in the Warwickshire Prem, scoring 1077 runs across all formats including a season-saving 119* on the final day to keep Rugby in the top flight.
Chamu is certain to be a genuine contributor next summer having a wealth of pro experience behind him. Chamu is a Cricket South Africa Level 2 coach.
