Deshan Dias is an experienced Opening Batsman/Wicket-Keeper currently playing for Lankan Cricket Club in the Sri Lankan domestic competitions. Having been schooled at St Sebastian’s College Moratuwa, who produced International players such as Duleep Mendis, Prasanna Jayawardene, Romesh “Kalu” Kaluwitharana & Amila Aponso, Deshan has joined the cast of many who have gone on to play First Class cricket domestically.
In 2008, Deshan was the wicket keeper and opening batsman for Sri Lanka U17 team which toured India and 2009 saw him debut in the National U23 tournament for Colts CC at just 17. He represented Sri Lanka U19 in 2010 having been the top scorer with 1322 runs in
DIV 1 schools tournament with 2 centuries & & 11 half centuries.
Deshan would make his first class debut in 2012 and after three intial steady seasons, he had a stellar 2015, finishing the SLC emerging tournament with 780 runs, including one double hundred, two centuries and five fiftys to be voted unanimously the batsman of the tournament. He carried this form into 2015-16, as Deshan had easily his best First class season, scoring 373 runs @ 53.28 for Bloomfield Athletic, scoring two quality hundreds. His switch to Burgher Recreation Club from 2016 onwards, whilst not yielding the First class numbers he would have liked, has seen him improve his one-day cricket and cement a regular slot in the opening role for BRC.
2022 was a real stride forward for Deshan, scoring 488 runs @ 48.80 in the first 6 FC games of the summer with 2 x 100s.
Seeking his first trip to the UK in summer 2023, Deshan took an opportunity with Milnrow CC in the GMCL. His first season in the UK was an excellent return, scoring 810 runs @ 57.85 with a bat as well as nabbing 17 dismissals with the gloves to go with 13 wickets with his tidy Offies.
He returned in summer 2024, joining Cullompton CC in the Devon Cricket League. He was excellent, scoring 747 runs @ 62 in the league, as well as picking up 20 dismissals and 11 wickets as the club won promotion.
Deshan will be a good pick up for a club seeking a keen and capable left-handed top order Batsman who can keep-wicket and bowl the occasional off-break next season.
