Jhedli Van Brieses is a talented youngster from the beautiful Mossel Bay in South Africa’s South West. A Right-handed Top Order Batsman, Jhedli is also a exceptional young wicket-keeper. A regular selection for the South Western Districts Provincial age-group squads from the age of 13 through to summer 2019-20, when selected not only for the SWD U19 side to contest the prestigious Khaya Majola National U19 Championships but also the Cape Cobras Franchise Cubs side.
A standout performer for Langenhoven Gim High School, 2019-20 was a breakout year for him. After a sub-par Khaya Majola tournament in December 2019, his selection for the Cape Cobras Cubs side was a show of faith in his ability. The faith was repaid, scoring 190 runs @ 95.00 in 5 games, with scores of 22*, 58*, 56 & 54*. His rich vein of form at the Cubs week culminated in Jhedli being handed his debut for South Western Districts against rivals, Eastern Province. Selected as a batsman, he scored a patient 1st innings 24 (42) in a draw but didn’t look out of place at that level. He would follow his debut up with another5 matches to close out the summer and showed enough to be handed a semi-pro contract for 2020-21.
Jhedli headed to the UK for the first time in summer 2022, joining Norfolk Premier Division stalwarts, North Runcton CC. An interrupted season due to a family bereavement was a tough time for Jhedli but he returned to the UK and to his credit, returned a solid first outing with 447 runs @ 31.93.
He returned in 2023, linking with West of Scotland CC in the WDCU Premier Division, scoring 420 runs and chipping in with a few handy wickets. Unfortunately, his season was again affected by a family bereavement and he had to return early. Jhedli returned for a shortened stint in 2024, linking with Hinton Charterhouse CC, scoring 990 runs @ 58 before having to return to SA.
A typically enthusiastic youngster, Jhedli is seeking another season abroad next year and will be a good pick up for a UK club seeking an tidy gloveman that could provide a real spark to the batting line up with his generally attacking style of play. He is also a handy off-spinner.
