Jon-Jon Smuts

Jon-Jon ‘JJ’ Smuts is one of South African domestic cricket’s most outstanding performers since his debut back in 2007. A hard-hitting Right-handed Top Order Batsman, he is also a skilful Slow Left-arm Orthodox Spinner. Having played exclusively for his home province throughout most of his career, JJ switched to the Dolphins ahead of the 2022-23 summer.

A former Protea, JJ made his first appearance for South Africa against Sri Lanka in a T20I at Centurion. He went on to represent South Africa on 19 occasions, 6 of those One-Day Internationals in which he averaged 45.00 with a best of 84 cricketer against Australia, leading a successful chase of 258 at Potchefstroom.

JJ has had a number of trips to the UK since he first appeared in professional cricket. A 2010 stint with Chorley CC in the ECB Northern Premier League was followed by a Lancashire League summer with Bacup CC the following year. He returned in 2016 for a short stint for Radlett CC and in summer 2022, he returned to the UK for the first time as an International Cricketer, linking with Upminster CC in the Essex League.

He returned to Upminster for the 2024 season and his 764 runs @ 63 to go with 31 wickets @ 18 was yet another excellent return.

A high class all-rounder, JJ will be an excellent pick up for any club seeking a Left-arm Spinner that can dominate with the bat for next summer. JJ’s family will join him for a period of 1 month during the summer.
