Protea #112, Keegan Petersen is an accomplished Professional South African cricketer originally from Paarl in the Western Cape but currently residing in Pretoria, where he is contracted to the Titans Franchise. A patient Right-handed batsman, occasional wicket-keeper and occasional leg break bowler, Keegan has played for a number of Provincial sides and completed his studying at Stellenbosch University.
An outstanding domestic career which contains almost 300 professional games, he debuted in First Class cricket in early 2012 off the back of excellent youth career for his native Boland Province. With less than 10 first class games under his belt, Keegan was selected to represent the South African Invitational XI to face the touring Kiwi’s, scoring 76* against a full strength Blackcaps bowling attack in December 2012.
As his career developed, he showed what he could do across all three formats and was the leading run-scorer in the 2018–19 CSA 4-Day Franchise Series, with 923 runs in nine matches and backed it up with 414 runs @ 51.75 on the One-Day competition of the same season. In December 2019, Keegan was rewarded for his outstanding showings at domestic level, as he was added to South Africa’s Test squad for their series against England but didn’t feature. 12 months later, Keegan was again named in South Africa’s Test squad for their series against Sri Lanka but was ruled out after testing positive for COVID-19.
January 2021 saw Keegan once again named in the Test squad for their series against Pakistan but had to wait patiently until June 2021 to make his debut, finally rewarded for his performances with a maiden Test Cap on the tour of the West Indies, making his debut in the 1st test. He showed why he belonged shortly thereafter, finishing the Test series against the visiting Indians as the leading run-scorer, with 276 runs @ 46.00, collecting man of the match for his 72 & 82 in the 3rd test to see the Proteas home for a series win and topped it off with the Player of the Series trophy.
Keegan has had quite a lot of UK experience and it’s no surprise that those tough runs on English wickets paid dividends like they have, with his best cricket being delivered whilst spending his off seasons in England. Stints with Read (2015), Crompton (2016), Rawtenstall (2018) & Stroud (2019) saw him set a platform for the so far very impressive career he has earned for himself.
Seeking a return to the UK next summer, Keegan will simply be one of the classiest batting options available for next season.
