Llew Johnson is an exciting talent from Otago in New Zealand. A dashing, Right-Handed Top Order Batsman, he started to make his mark on New Zealand Cricket as a 14-year old for Otago U17 in the National U17 Championships. During his 3 years at U17 Level, he also represented North Otago in the Hawke Cup. In 2016-17, Llew incredibly played in the National U19 tournament and then backed up a fortnight later and played his final year of U17 Nationals. He would then spend a further 2 years in the Otago U19 side through to 2018-19.
Originally from Oamaru in the North of Southern Island state, Otago, Llew attended Waitaki Boys High School for 3 years then received a cricket scholarship to St Andrews College in Christchurch, New Zealand. Where he finished his last 2 years of school, averaging 46.2 across 30 games with a total of 1352 runs. His feats at school, combined with his outstanding age-group performances led to Llew making his senior Otago debut in the Georgie Pie Super Smash at just 17.
Known for his expansive stroke play, his, he scored 135 from 65 balls in 2017/18 in a Premier League match, which triggered his call up to the Senior side. He also has had success in the longer formats playing for North Otago, averaging 78.67 in the Hawke Cup in 2018-19. A natural Leader, he has skippered a number of the age group sides and is very highly thought of by the Volts, very much seen as one for the future. In November 2020, Llew struck a league record 256* against University Grange CC, his extraordinary knock coming off 154 balls.
In summer 2022, Llew ventured abroad for the first time, landing in the Emerald Isle and linking with Rush CC in the Leinster League. He made his mark on the league in game 1, a stunning 154 (104) hitting 8 x Fours and 14 x Sixes. He would finish the season with 1104 runs @ 64.94 and confirming what we already knew, the lad can play.
The Otago & North East Valleys dasher now seeks to head abroad again and will be an excellent pick up for any club seeking a high-flying top order Batsman for next summer.
