Matthew Christensen is a precociously talented Batsman originally from Cape Town but now based in Port Elizabeth. A classy right-hander, occasional wicket-keeper and part-time off-spinner, Matthew was a schoolboy star for Rondesbosch Boys High School. A regular for his native Western Province through the age groups, Matthew made his first provincial appearance at U13 level. He then went on to represent Western Province at U15, U17 & U19 level. His outstanding youth career was capped off with selection for the South African U19 side in 2014 and the Cape Cobras Cubs during 2014-15.
Matthew would opt to study in Port Elizabeth, joining Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Eastern Province. He would make his professional debut for Eastern Province at the 2015 Africa Cup and has gone on to become a regular in the Provincial side across all three formats. Despite somewhat of a “hit and miss” start to his professional career, Matthew had been identified as a player of promise and was selected for the University Sport South Africa squad in 2016 and backed this up in 2017 with selection for the South African Emerging Players program.
Matthew’s selection for SA Emerging has proved to be a real catalyst for sparking more consistent performance. Prior to the Emerging players call-up, Matthew had accrued 410 runs @ 17.82 in 18 matches, in red ball cricket. Since his selection for the Emerging side, Matthew has scored 1565 runs @ 39.13, scoring 9 x 50’s and his maiden first class hundred in that time. Matthew is in career best form at present.
Seeking his first season in the UK in 2023, Matthew will be a great pick up for any club seeking a highly talented top order Batsman than keep wicket or bowl a few off-spinners if required.
