Matt Smit is an outstanding and proven run-scoring machine from Gauteng, South Africa. A hard-hitting Left-handed top order Batsman, Matt is also a more than capable Right-arm Off-spinner who comes from a talented cricketing family, with brother Nick playing for Gauteng in First Class Cricket. Matt attended St Benedicts College Catholic School for Boys and was a regular feature in the School’s 1st XI by 16. He won 85 caps for the School, a record and in his last year of school (2013) was the 1st XI captain and represented Gauteng at U17 Level in the preceding summer (2012-13).

Whilst still at school, Matt joined Jeppe Quondam CC in the Gauteng Premier League and made his 1st XI debut as a 16 year old in Johannesburg’s Premier Cricket competition. He has been an institution for the club since joining them, picking up a number of accolades including Gauteng Cricket Board Premier League cricketer of the year in 2016-17 as well as Batsman of the year in 2017-18. His performances have helped guide Jeppe Quondam CC to multiple T20 titles and a 50-Over title in 2017-18.

A resolute character that seeks constant personal improvement, Matt has made good use of his off seasons, spending every winter in the UK since 2014. His first stint in Kent with Od Cuaco as a 19 year old was outstanding and yielded 1875 runs @ 85 & 45 wickets @ 16. His performance caught the eye of local clubs with Linden Park (2015) bringing him back to the area and benefitting from his 2407 runs and 29 wickets by holding their place in Kent Div 1. He would then spend 2 summers with Bromley CC in the Kent Premier League and 1st Division in 2016/17. His 789 runs in 2016 wasn’t enough to save the club from relegation but his 1058 league runs in 2017 prevented any further slip down the Kent pyramid. For 2018, Matt would venture to Holland, linking with Voorburg CC in the Hoofdklasse, with his 467 runs @ 116.75 proving crucial to a promotion to the 2019 Topklasse competition.

Seeking a return to the Northern Hemisphere for 2022, Matt will be a great pick up for any club seeking a hard-hitting all-rounder for next summer that has more than convinced us all of his ability to pile on the runs and contribute regularly with the ball in hand.

Matt is also an internationally accredited Personal trainer
