Matthew Spoors had long been pegged as one of the more gifted young all-round talents in and around the Pathway/State system in Australia. A hard-working Right-handed Top Order Batsman, Matthew is also an equally adept Right-arm Leg-Spinner. From Western Australia, Matthew had a short stint in Adelaide ahead of summer 2021-22, linking with Sturt DCC in the South Australia Premier Cricket Competition before getting a shot with Canada, playing 15 Internationals for them between 2022-2023.
He returned to Western Australia in 2023, pushing his way into the Western Australia 2nd XI and starring for Scarborough DCC the club where it all began as a junior, earning a Big Bash contract for the Perth Scorchers ahead of the 2024-25 Big Bash League of the back of his good form.
A prolific schoolboy cricketer, Matthew was a regular feature for Western Australia at age group level, appearing regularly for the U17/U19 sides and ultimately appeared on a number of occasions for the Western Australia 2nd XI after receiving a State Rookie contract ahead of season 2017-18. Matthew was also selected for the Australian U19 side as a 17-year old.
Having been a Scarborough junior, he shifted to Waneroo DCC until 2019-20 when his return to his junior club sparked an outstanding run of form that ultimately led to his selection for the Cricket Australia XI to take on Pakistan in November 2019. Having walked in with CAXI in trouble, Matthew dug in against the impressive Pakistan bowling attack and put on a 122-run stand with fellow former Aussie U19 teammate, Jonathan Merlo before finishing on 58 (155) and helping the CA XI seal a comfortable draw against the tourists.
His move to Adelaide was productive, with 870 runs/40 wickets in his first season and no doubt caught the eye of Canadian selectors. He went on to make 15 international appearances and scored 108* on debut for the Maple Leaf’s.
Seeking his first season abroad in 2023, Matthew headed to Essex, signing for Mistley CC in the Two Counties Championship and was excellent for the Swans, scoring 1022 runs and bagging 44 wickets during the summer.
Now a much more established pro, Matthew will be a great pick up for any club seeking a genuine all-rounder that is a genuine match-winner. Matthew will be available until Mid-June.
