Nick Welch is an naturally gifted top order Batsman, originally from Zimbabwe but having spent a large portion of his life in the UK. Previously contracted to Leicestershire County Cricket Club, Nick is an exciting Right-hander who showed glimpses of his talent in his limited opportunities in the 1st XI before opting to return to Zimbabwe to pursue his international career at the end of the 2023 UK season. He made his test debut in February 2025 for Zimbabwe having already debuted in T20 Cricket fir the Chevrons almost immediately on his return in 2023.
A schoolboy star, Nick attended the prestigious St Johns College, Harare. A regular feature for the Zimbabwe age group sides that contested the Cricket South Africa National Age championships, he made his First Class debut just after his 16th Birthday for the Mashonaland Eagles in Zimbabwe’s domestic competition.
Having spent a number of seasons trialling in various County 2nd XI squads, Nick was awarded a contract at Leicestershire CCC off the back of a couple of excellent 2nd XI performances in just 4 matches for the Foxes including an excellent 119 (122) against Northamptonshire.
Whilst overall his 1st XI game time was limited, Nick showed he can deliver in the top flight with not only his 127* (125) in the 2022 Royal London Cup, opening the batting against Surrey, whom he had trialled with but also in the 2022 Vitality Blast.
Leicestershire CCC won all 5 Blast games that Nick featured in with his 46 (23) against Yorkshire an absolute delight to watch as the Foxes went on a winning streak that would have won them a place in the Quarter Finals if not for a a discipline breach robbing them of their place in the knock-outs.
In club land, Nick had a very happy home at Wimbledon CC for a number of seasons and was a run scoring machine, with his 804 runs @ 73.09 during summer 2022 an outstanding return, with his final day 117 (60) to wipe the floor with Ashtead CC sealing the powerhouse clubs’ first title since 2013.
Since returning to Zimbabwe, Nick has gone on to make appearances in both T20 and Test match cricket, scoring 90 on test debut against Ireland. His debut came off the back of stellar form for the Mountaineers Franchise in the 2024-25 Logan Cup, scoring 823 runs @ 58.78 for the summer.
A dynamite top-order Batsman, Nick will be an outstanding addition to any team, anywhere in the world, that look to host his top order exploits in the future.
