Sanajya Chathuranga

Sanjaya is an experienced spin-bowling all-rounder from Panadura in Sri Lanka. A dashing left-hander that can bat anywhere in the order, he was originally pencilled in as a leg spinner that could bat a bit during the age groups and was selected in various National spin development squads in the late noughties. Over time however, his inventive stroke play and brute force hitting saw him force his way into the top order and his leg-spin took a back seat with the exception of T20 cricket, where his leggies proved very useful.

Having debuted in First Class Cricket at 19, it would take a couple of seasons before he was able to pin down a regular spot for Panadura Sports Club, Badureliya Sports Club and ultimately Ragama CC in the Sri Lankan domestic competitions. Holding a place more on promise than return, he was selected for the Sri Lankan Emerging players on many occasions as well, playing in most of the squads fixtures on their 2016 tour to South Africa.

Sanjaya has two previous seasons of experience in the UK, having spent the 2017 & 2018 summers with Wimbledon CC in the ECB Surrey Championship. He has also had a number of seasons playing in Australia, where he has proved a valuable all-round contributor throughout his stints in Oz.

Sanjaya ventured back to the UK in 2021, joining Epsom CC in the Surrey Championship, bagging 34 wickets @ 13.12 and chipping in with 326 runs @ 21.73.

Seeking to return next summer, Sanjaya will be a good pick up for any UK club chasing a genuine strike leg-spinner that is also a capable middle order Batsman. Sanjaya is an ECB Level 2 coach.
