Wandile Makwetu is a talented Wicket-Keeper/Batsman, born in Cape Town but spent his formative years in Gauteng, schooled at the Prestigious St Stithians College, Joahnnesburg. A hard-htting Right-hander, he is an outstanding gloveman, one of the best in South Africa and has been considered so throughout his developmental age-group cricket through to his professional debut. Wandile represented South Africa at two ICC U19 World Cups, first selected as a 17-year old for the 2016 edition in Bangladesh and then again for the 2018 tournament hosted by New Zealand.
Having starred for Gauteng through the age groups, the exciting young talent made his first Professional appearances for their neighbouring province, Northerns in March 2018 on his return from the World Cup. Having appeared for Northerns on a handful of occasions and with limited success, a switch to the Free State at the end of the 2018-19 season followed by selection for the Emerging Players Programme in the winter seemed to ignite his game in summer 2019-20. Before it was cut short by COVID, Wandile had accrued 829 runs @ 41.45 with a match-winning best of 119 against Boland at Bloemfontein in November 2019.
Further selection in the Emerging Players squad in 2021 for the tour to Namibia was followed by a return to his original Province of Gauteng ahead of the 2022-23 season.
Wandile had his first season in the UK as a professional in 2023, having signed for Moseley Ashfield CC in the Warwickshire Cricket League. He was exceptional as the club secured promotion to the Premier Division. His 591 runs @ 45.46 played a significant part.
Wandile will be a good pick up for any club seeking a talented Top Order Batsman that is an outstanding Wicket-keeper for next summer.
