Ben Lockrose is one of a new breed of spin bowling talent in New Zealand. Born in England but bred in Otago, Ben is currently contract to the Otago Volts in New Zealand’s domestic competitions. Having relocated to Otago as a youngster, Ben has progressed through the local system and was a standout for Otago Boys High. He would go on to clean up at various age competitions and was the leading wicket taker at the National Schoolboys championships in late 2017. Ben was promptly selected to represent New Zealand at the 2018 ICC Under 19 World Cup.
Prior to the World Cup though, still just 17 and still at school, Ben was called up to make his Otago Debut just after Christmas, selected to play 2 x T20 Super Smash games. His debut was excellent, bagging 1-23 off his 4 overs but wasn’t enough to hold off a powerful Auckland side. He’d have to wait until late 2018 to be selected again but after missing out on selection during the COVID period, he forced his way back in to the Volts side in early 2022 and was rewarded with a contract for the 2022-23 season.
Ben imbedded himself in the Volts side throughout the 2022-23 summer, playing all 3 formats and bowling exceptionally well in the white ball competitions, with excellent economy in both T20 & 50-Over Cricket.
Ben has had 2 previous seasons of experience in the UK, both with Hampstead CC in the Middlesex League in summers 2021 & 2022. His 41 appearances for the club yielded 88 wickets in a successful spell with the club.
Keen to return to the UK next summer, Ben will bring an experience beyond his years to any UK club seeking a classy left-arm spinner that is a more than useful middle order batsman that is working tirelessly to improve his runs tally each season and is a keen youth coach, holding a New Zealand Cricket Level 1 qualification.
