Janith Chathuranga is a high quality seam-bowling all-rounder from Ahungalla on Sri Lanka’s south-west coast. A hard-hitting right-hander suited to the middle order, Janith is an accomplished right-arm fast/medium seamer with decent pace. A little bit of a late bloomer, having not been a regular in age group sides throughout his youth age groups has probably been key to Janith’s success. A hard worker, he pushed his way into the Sri Lankan Army Sports Club senior squad and made his first class debut at 20 years old for the Sri Lankan Army Sports Club, who he still plays for today.

A steady performer in First Class cricket with a solid record, he has been most effective in white-ball cricket. A clever bowler With subtle variation and ability to bowl to a plan, he has proved to be very economical in the shorter formats. Overall, he has just shy of 200 professional wickets across all three formats and features regularly for SL Army in all three. A stoic batsman, he puts a high price on his wicket lower down the order in the Professional game, with 5 half-centuries and an average of 26.16 in 50-over cricket where he often gets the chance to put together runs at the end of the innings.

Janith has one season of experience in the UK, having joined Lindal Moor CC in the 2019 Cumbria Cricket League. He was outstanding for the club, scoring 792 runs @ 41.68 with a best performance of 111 (57), hitting eleven 6’s on his way to setting up a big win as he collected 3-21 (8) to keep working 172 runs short of the 254 required as they were routed for just 81. He collected 44 wickets @ 19.09 for the season with a best of 5-27 against Egremont defending 129 by 74 runs.

Seeking a return to the UK next summer, Janith will be a good pick up for any club seeking a genuine seam-bowling all-rounder with a proven record in the UK for next summer.
